Guild Wars 2. The base game is the best part of the game. That will be the f2p game on steam. The expansions are made for the hardcore players. The scaled-up difficulty is shocking to new f2p players if they buy the expansions. You will need to grind for the best gear in the game if you don't want to die over and over. You can play a decent chunk of Guild Wars 2 without paying. You get access to about 1/2 of the maps, 8 out of the 9 core classes, the end-game 5-man dungeons (called Fractals), and all of the competitive modes--PvP and World vs. World. So that's probably enough to keep you busy for a while. Most of the locked content requires a full levelled character (Level 80) that you can achieve as F2P. Having the expansion doesn't increase this process much except for the instant lev 80 booster (which you should not use for a primary character).
